Glorify Alienation !
Choi, Tae-Man/Art critic

The paradox of the glorification of alienation which is undercurrent in Oh Won-Bae’s oeuvre is a necessary outcome of the painter’s insight riveted to the tragic alienation, that is the predicament of human existence in our age. His idea of alienation refers to less a cutoff from human relationship or the solitude in its wake than an existentialist condition, which Artist Oh has materialized in his paintings through the image of human figures thrown into a specific condition. His ouevre thus denies to stand for or depict abstract ideas thereby raising a fundamental question about human reality. In this regard, his works transcends magical power of figure to approximate the imagination of human science.

In fact, alienation is a philosophical concept drawn from self-alienation or self-reification developed in Hegel’s system of philosopy. Marx made an appropriation of this concept to be subsumed in the politico-economical realm; the alienation of labor. In Artist Oh’s oeuvre, alienation is an existentialist one in lieu of the degradation of human values as shown in the alienation of labor in terms of politico-economical system.

Artist Oh however did not turn his back upon the sordid reality while overwhelmed by existentialist anguish. His launching of artistic career coincides with the pinnacle of despotism in the 70s Park’s regime. It is no wonder that his early works addresses frustration and criticism of social injustice and contradictions; however, his messages are metaphorically rendered in traditional icons like masks in lieu of direct expression. Against the backdrop of desolate landscape haunted by haggard souls, one can confirm a creative marriage between his pathos of imagination. However, after his study abroad in France, a massive lump of protein is presented in an intermingled and struggliing way, an outcome of painful insight into human savagery. The intensity of figures fortified by the dark and drab background pushed the tragedy of his works to the fare.

Now Artist Oh is going through a gradual self-transformation. A striking change is visible in his concreteness in portraying human figures. As mentioned above, human figures used to be rendered in the form of animals or devils approximating massive lumps of flesh armed with avarice and aggression. Or humans were portrayed as anonymous completely bereft of individuality. Futher, these monsters were set loose in familiar though strange environment or confined in a labyrinth without exit. The backdrop of this eerie scene must be a historic site or our neighbourhood in truth; however, being devoid of specific qualities, it is tantamount to a panic room that heightens the scenic tension. Moreover, the rough strokes of brush combined with thick texture not only heightens the atmosphere of isolation and cutoff but also adds to the eerie and desolate aspect of the scene. The act of invasion and ravaging by anonymous beings in unrealistic space has been etched in the spectators’ consciousness as the hallmark of his icons. Facing this soul-searing icons we cannot help saying his message is alienation, unavoidable and irrevocable.

Along with human figures depicted as a lump of protein, Artist Oh presents a being caught between colossal iron structures and bridges which adumbrates the panic of contemporary society communicated through the dicourse of painting. To this artist, alienation is human predicament of existence which cannot be disobeyed; it amounts to an existential scar cut into the consciousness of a human being as soon as she is disclosed to his/her Sein in Heideggerian sense. Also, like Lacans’ phallus, say, birth itself is to stimulate yearning for the lost jouissance, alienation cannot be recovered through the normalization of relationships or voluntary involvement in the specific situation. Your keen awareness of existence itself makes yourself already and always a slave to the abesession with alienation.

Oh’s fatal obession with alienation also assumes a religious dimension. Of course, he stands far away from religious determinism; however, his indefatigable will to face alienation as it is indubitably indicates his yearning for religious transcendence. Under this context shoud the paradox of glorification of alienation be understood as a precess of self-renunciation thereby to achieve and obtain religious transcendence and soul-saving grace. Self-renunciation is equal to freedom from obsession, in which respect Artist Oh’s imagination to play with alienation approximates Taoists’ care-free spirit.

How can we find the path on which we can be free by embracing and playing with alienation ? Recently, Oh, moving away from anonymity, attempts to carefully awaken the dignity of existence through the concrete rendering of human figures. Instead of a lonely figure blowing a bugle in the dark, a band of musicians engaged in concert in portrayed; the background is no longer an enclosed space but an open space. Still, gray tone dominates the scene, however, noble and pure golden and silver coloring is pervasive. More strikingly, embellishments which used to be stoically prohibited in the preceding works gradually surface. Particaulrly, those paintings whose materials consist of the cover images of rare old books collected during his sojourn in France appear to demonstrate the artist’s pleasure of painting while transgressing the boundary between the East and West, the past and present.

It is true however the anonymity of existence is still lingering over the canvas; half of the human figures are alive and the other ghostly. In this light, the artist might be imagined to be still obsessed with the theme of alienation. From a new standpoint, howeber, he seems to wish to show that we are not free existence in lieu of concrete figures. We can only surmise that he hopes to address the value of mutual respect and harmony by embedding concert performance instead of isolated solos.

Particularly noticeable is the change made in dealing with space; the walls or enclosed rooms are broken open and the complex structure are replaced by symbols of geometrical cubics, which evoke existential condition. In other words, his canvas gradually becomes a leisurely and cozy place for the spectators. Barreness and desolateness replaced by openness and concreteness in the portrayal of space and humand figures appears to highlight his trajectory of creation which pursues the liberationof consciousness beyond the consciousness burdened by the weight of alienation. Rhetorically speakiing, alienation is freedom and liberation, which is the stuff his paintings are made on. ▲
